I would like to think that this is "unbelievable," however I am not too impressed. If you are a person/business looking for a drive that has a lot of room (in one device) this drive would be for you. However with the seek time being only 8.5ms, I have seen better 500gb drives run at 4ms. Never the less for what it is is worth here are my thoughts.
Pro's:
1: Great for massive data storage in one place or if you are business that wants to cut back on multiple drives, this is all you.
2: Apart from the seek time, the data transfer is fast, as is the writing at Sata-300 3,000mb/sec.)
3: The cost is a little high per gigabyte. (At $449.99 = $2.22 per gigabyte as 7/5/07)
Con's:
1: Seek time could be better.
2: 5 platters?, wow.... reminds me of the old days when they impressed people with the 100 megabyte drives.
3: Two 500 gigabyte drives would cost less. Hey, even two 750's would be about the same price.
4: Drive only comes with 36 months parts/labor. Seagate still holds the best at 5 years.
Honestly, I think Hitachi is just trying to get into the game with the first internal terabyte hard drive. I could be very wrong, but what hard drive manufacturer couldn't cram five 200gb platters into a case? Time will tell on this one, I just hope that it doesn't start a bad habbit with quality/price.
