This is a two part answer. There are logical & physical reasons for data corruption. Let's talk about the logical one first. An example of logical is when you press the delete key and did not mean to. Formatting a drive or a problem with scandisk/defragmentor occurs. A very common logical corruption is when a virus infects a hard drive. Physical corruptions is when moisture, air, or dust penetrates the hard drive chassis and creates bad sectors. Exposure to extreme temperatures/humidity. Power surges overloading the drive. Last but not least, just plan old mechanical failure. Both Logical and Physical failures can be devastating to the user.
