Data Recovery Do-It-Yourself Myth:

Swapping Hard Drive Boards with Identical Boards

Do-it-yourself recovery data is all over the Internet, however some of these remedies just don’t work anymore and are really out-dated.  Some of these tricks to recover a hard drive will only lead you further down the rabbit hole into complete disastrous loss of your data.  Years ago, many of these tricks worked on “ancient” storage technology, this is true, but consider the following example.

One recovery method found on the web is recovery by means of swapping a printed circuit board (PCB) with an identical circuit board.  In some cases when a hard drive quit working, it used to be possible to simply switch boards to get the drive working again temporarily to get the data off the platter.

Today, with current technology, this dated technique can be and is disastrous.  Older hard drives stored self-test data, bad sector tables, and other critical information on the disk platter.  On today’s drives, the data is stored in the PCB.  If you remove this information, when the drive starts up, the drive will not function properly and begin to further turn your data useless.  Data will corrupt.

In a final note, if your data is critical to you, and there is no backup, don’t risk losing it forever with this outdated “trick.”  Call DriveSavers, and get the data back.
