Why do Hard Drives have to Fail?
 
Hard drive fail due to a simple flaw that mankind created called mechanics.  Simply put, they just wear out.  A hard drive spins on an average of 5400 to 7200 rpm's (revolutions per minute), and some being as fast as 10,000 rpm's.  Now if you can only imagine spinning like that for a minute and being constantly touched in random places on your body, how long would it take for it to start to hurt?  Not too long, fortunately hard drives are build much tougher than us, so they can take a lot more abuse. In time they will deteriorate and mechanically fail due to particle fragments, imperfections, environmental issues, etc. (Return to FAQ Page)
